Number Crunching

Musing Mondays2

How many books do you read in a week? Month? Year?

“Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes…” Remember that song Seasons of Love from Rent the musical? 525,600 is a year broken down to the minutes. How many of these are you spent in reading? Talking on your phone? Being online, in particular Facebook? Ever since I became a serious reader who never passes a day without reading, I measure the year with the number of books read. I’m a constant and intent reader. Speed reading is not my forte and I don’t have a caper for general fiction or popular fiction. Last year I read 80 books. In a month I average anywhere between 4 to 9 books, depending on the length and denseness of the books and their subject matter. A typical 4 -book month would be a Toni Morrison novel and some big tomes like Ayn Rand. The book that took me the longest to read this year is Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, 14 days. Usually I manage to finish one book a week, a ballpark number that has grown very steady. As of today, I have read 71 books so I’m just about hitting the number.

  1. And now I have that song stuck in my head (not that it’s a bad song to be stuck there, I guess).

Last year I read around 90 books, but I wasn’t blogging about them or reflecting on them much then. This year I’ll end up reading about 60, I think.

  2. I so love that song and yes, now I’m belting it because you know that’s what I do since I live alone. I’m a Grammy award winner at my house. 🙂

I’ve read over 120 books this year, and I’m super excited about that. Last year I read over 100, and it was the first year I ever kept track. I don’t push myself. In fact, November was a slow reading month for me because I was so busy. But yes, it’s definitely a huge part of my life.

  3. Well I’m 21 years old and I want to get a tatto and I know is for life so I know what I want, but haven’t found the picture that tells me that’s it…I want to get a butterfly, but not just any butterfly so any of you know some good design please let me know? I want to get it on my angle thanks ( on the lower inside) lol…if that makes sence lol

  4. I have read 72 so far this year so my books read a week/month is about the same as yours.

  5. That’s a lot of books! I used to read nearly that many but my reading has really slowed down over the past couple of years. I look forward to 2012 and the hope that I may read more!
