A New Reading Challenge – Outmoded Authors

I came across yet another reading challenge that will begin in fall, on 9/1. Outmoded Authors Reading Challenge, sounds rather eclectic, indeed is “a reading challenge for all interested in exploring authors who were kicked out of the in crowd.” Surely the authors adopted in this fun challenge are not necessarily the Penguin Classics titles, which is very exciting because I can explore the works of authors I have never read before.

A glimpse at the author list reveals a few familiar names: D.H. Lawrence, Italo Svevo, Malcolm Lowry (I have to admit that Under the Volcano was quite a strenuous reading experience), and W. Somerset Maugham, whose works have contributed to this blog a substantial fare. Other authors are completely new to me.

The challenge will last for 6 months (isn’t that great?) until the end of February 2008 and leave plenty of time to explore the various authors before I finalize the list.  During that time participant may choose to read unlimited number of books by however many authors one likes. I have printed the author list to take with me for the next library visit.

I will post my tentative reading list by Friday.

  1. Looking forward to reading your list! I wanted to read something by Maugham after reading one of your reviews – The Painted Veil I think. I’m just trying to stick with books I already have though. Gotta do something about those stacks!

  2. I was really tempted to join this challenge, but I think I’m just going to be too strapped with work and other challenges. Can’t wait to read your list, though!

  3. I think I’m going to join in this one, too!

I don’t really know where to begin. I’ll bring the list of authors with me to the library and bookstore and see what I can come up with. It will be so much fun reading authors I’ve never read. Any suggestions?

Seems like you have a plate full indeed with teaching. I’d love to keep up with what you’re reading outside challenges.
