Belated Report on Read-a-thon

Everyone must be recovering from the 24-hour read-a-thon as the blogsphere is awfully quiet. Yesterday morning at 5, the aroma of the pot of dark-roast coffee kicked off my read-a-thon. I finished the second half of Fixer Chao, a brilliant debut by Han Ong, and wrote a review of it. That was an encouraging beginning and set the mood for the day. When daybreak began to take over the dark, as the sky turned turquoise-blue, I set off to the coffee shop and continued to read. To put the events of the day into a chronological perspective:

06:50 Situate myself at the coffee shop, usual table at the corner. Start Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw.
08:15 Halfway through Pygmalion, taking notes along with reading.
08:50 Got into the car and drove to a dog show in Dickson, CA. Read the whole way during the 80-minute drive.
10:30 Continued Pygmalion while peering over the dalmatian ring. 133 pages.
13:00 Back in the city, had lunch. Started The World of Normal Boys by K.M. Soehnlein. Read 180 pages.
16:00 Break time. Headed to the gym to work out. Perused the latest issue of The Economist over the treadmill.
18:00 For a change of wind, opened Surprising Myself by Christopher Bram and started reading.
19:40 Had dinner break.
20:00 Popped in My Fair Lady, continued to peruse Surprising Myself over Audrey Hepburn’s Cockney dialect, a reprisal of Pygmalion finished earlier the day.
22:00 Needed a nap, so crashed on the couch.
00:10 Continued to read The World of Normal Boys and finished.

Total number of pages read: 727 Books read: 2.5

  1. Any day that includes books *and* dogs must qualify as a great day! :-)

  2. Sounds like a wonderful day to me! I need to investigate the coffee shops in my area (preferable non Starbucks) and find a “usual” corner.

  3. I used to have a Dalmatian. I’m not sure your day could have been any better.

  4. Books, coffee, dog show, treadmill (or a walk)….my kind of day!!

  5. I’m glad you let your day continue on organically.

You made a lot of good progress :)

  6. Great going, Matt! It was awesome that you did your normal things outside the house and still got to join the readathon!

  7. Excellent way to spend the day. And I just learned an intersting fact about My Fair Lady. Thanks Matt.
